Could Santa Cruz be the next “Gig City”?

Santa Cruz has always been known as a beach community, an oasis where Bay Area citizens can escape into the sunny bliss of rolling surf and beautiful redwoods. However, in recent months, Santa Cruz is making waves in another way, following Kansas City, Chattanooga and Lafayette in creating a hyper-connected “Gig City.”

But where other cities have relied on public funds or the efforts of large corporations, the Santa Cruz high-bandwidth network is expanding through partnerships between local ISP Cruzio and private building owners.

In 2010, Cruzio opened its own office and coworking facility, Cruzioworks, with a direct connection to Silicon Valley via 10 gigabits of fiber-optic Internet. Small businesses and technologists flocked to Cruzioworks. Soon after opening, the 12,000 square foot space was almost filled, to over 90% occupancy.

Think Local First at Cruzioworks

Wonderful party/showcase last week when hundreds of people came to celebrate local business at the Think Local First mixer at Cruzioworks in downtown Santa Cruz.
Buying locally puts a much higher percentage of your dollars back into your own community where it can be used to foster a safer, cleaner, better environment in which to live in and raise children.

By the way, Cruzio Internet is 100% local. Locally owned, all employees live and work in Santa Cruz County. We understand the benefit of buying from businesses in our own community and we do so whenever we can.

Explosive Speeds from Cruzio’s New Velocity Product

There’s a reason we’re calling our new Internet service “Velocity.”

First, though, we’ve got to give a disclaimer. Velocity speeds vary widely depending on your location and the quality of your lines. In Santa Cruz County, where our geography is mountainous and there are many rural areas, we know there are a lot of places where speeds would be only a small fraction of the maximum. It’s still a great value, at the lowest speeds as well as high ones, because it includes phone service.

New Window on Cedar Street

The Sentinel building used to be a long, uninterrupted wall of 10″ thick concrete down most of a block of Cedar Street. It had an element of Willy Wonka’s factory: what’s going on inside? You could see the newspaper’s presses through the far window, but other than that all was dark.

When Cruzio, Ecology Action and Joe Appenrodt renovated the building, we opened it up with windows and doors.

Your Cruzio Email

We know email is an important part of your day and how frustrating it can be when it’s unavailable.

If you’ve been affected by Cruzio’s email outages this week, our apologies. To bring our email back online as quickly as possible—and avoid any further outages—we’ve moved our email over to a different server. This will allow folks to send and receive email normally. Any saved emails will temporarily be unavailable, but should be accessible on Friday, 7/15.

We apologize for the unexpected disruption and expect this fix to resolve the issue.

If you want up-to-the-minute updates, you can: follow @cruzio_support on Twitter, subscribe to our RSS feed, or check out our Network Status page.

New Tech Meetup, July 6 2011

Cruzioworks hosted a New Tech Meetup session, attended by many of Santa Cruz’s geekiest citizens. The Meetup, headed by David Britton, always has interesting presentations and is a great way to meet other local technologists and see what’s going on in town. If you haven’t already, join at their website  — it’s easy and free of charge.

The speakers:

Shane Pearlman and Hilary Bryant presented their group, the Santa Cruz City Technical Task Force. This committee consists of local technologists from a variety of backgrounds who volunteered to help the City find ways to streamline policies and procedures.
